If you're a new parent, then you've probably heard about 'tummy time'. The hype is real, and tummy time is a super simple activity with loads of benefits for babies. It helps them develop their motor skills, strengthen their neck, back, and core muscles and also helps with cognitive and sensory development.
But learning and development aside, it's also a great bonding opportunity for both you and your baby.
I was surprised to learn that it's never too early to start. You can begin incorporating tummy time into your babies daily routine right from when they are a newborn. Starting with a few minutes, multiple times a day, and building up to longer periods of time as they grow and learn.
One of the main benefits is of course physical development, as it helps babies learn to lift their heads and eventually roll over, sit up, crawl, and walk.
But tummy time also helps with cognitive development by providing babies with a chance to explore their surroundings and interact with different textures, colours, and shapes. This helps to stimulate their senses and encourage their curiosity and problem-solving skills.
To make tummy time more enjoyable, try placing them on a soft mat, and using toys with different textures, patterns, shapes, and colours to capture their attention and keep them engaged. I know in our house the mirror provided loads of stimulation and entertainment.
With the right approach and a few fun toys, tummy time can be a wonderful bonding time for both you and your baby. As you watch them grow and reach new milestones, you'll be amazed at how much they accomplish down on the mat.
We find Dr Golly a wealth of knowledge on topics like this, and he's written some easy to understand guidelines on tummy time too.
