There's a reason its called the hemp revolution. This plant is making waves in the agricultural world, and for good reason. From its organic nature, ability to regenerate the soil and sequester carbon dioxide, hemp is a true standout among crops. Here are some of our favourite hemp facts.
Organic by Nature
The dense growth of hemp naturally repels pests and creates a shaded environment where weeds can't grow. This means that there's no need for harmful chemical pesticides or herbicides (huge win!). Plus, it makes hemp farms a safe haven for pollinators like bees.
Regenerating the Earth
Hemp is a true environmental hero. It absorbs carbon and nitrogen from the air returning it to the soil, and its deep root systems help hold the soil in place, minimising erosion. Additionally, (and in our opinion, incredibly) its roots draw out toxins such as heavy metals from the soil, making it an excellent choice for crop rotation to replenish depleted earth.
Saving Water and Energy
Hemp is a hardy plant that can be grown in a variety of climates with reasonable water requirements. For example, it takes four times less water to grow hemp than it does cotton.
Absorbing Carbon Dioxide
With its fast growth rate and lush foliage, hemp is a carbon sequestration powerhouse. In fact, it's been proven to absorb more carbon dioxide than any other plant or crop.
A High Achiever in Every Way
Hemp plants grow tall, up to 5 meters, and are packed tightly together, making them ideal for growing on limited land space. In fact, it's estimated that three times more hemp can be grown per meter than cotton. And, to top it off, hemp grows quickly, ready for harvest in just 3 to 5 months, and can be harvested multiple times a year.
Durability and Comfort Combined
Hemp fibers are incredibly strong, with three times the tensile strength of cotton, making hemp products durable and long-lasting. Additionally, the porous structure of hemp fibers makes them ultra-breathable, wicking moisture away from your skin to keep you cool and dry.
Say Goodbye to Itchiness and Hello to Antimicrobial Protection
Contrary to popular belief, hemp is not scratchy or itchy. In fact, it's naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, so you can wear it more and wash it less. Plus, hemp provides UV protection, making it an ideal choice for sensitive skin.
Closing the Loop
Hemp fabric is biodegradable and compostable, breaking down in just a few months, depending on the blend with other fabrics. Making it an eco-friendly choice for those looking to tread lightly on the earth.
